Its National Arts in Education Week! Heartfelt thanks of course to our directors Ryan McCreary and Sheila Davis-Pollard but also to our supportive school board and administration headed by Superintendent Dr. Barnett, to teachers Janet Fechner, Mike and Ann Sanford, Phoebe Jackson, Denise Ashley, Amy OBrien and to everyone involved with Jean Anns School of Dance, and our incredible Freeland Center for the Performing Arts for their tireless dedication to teaching and bringing the arts to our children and enriching our entire community in the process! In 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution designating the second week of September as “Arts in Education Week.” In part, the resolution states: Arts education, comprising a rich array of disciplines including dance, music, theatre, media arts, literature, design, and visual arts, is a core academic subject and an essential element of a complete and balanced education for all students. As Boosters who have seen first-hand the benefits that music education has on the students in our program, we could not agree more! In this excellent video courtesy of TED-Ed, we learn that while listening to music stimulates the brain in positive ways actually playing an instrument gives the brain a complete workout.
