Its November 28, and today is the 71st birthday of Randy Newman, born on this date in 1943. Newman is a singer-songwriter known for his distinctive voice, and hes also an arranger, composer, and pianist. Paul McCartney once called him the greatest songwriter alive. Perhaps his biggest hit was Mama Told Me (Not to Come), originally written by him for Eric Burdon, but made famous by Three Dog Night. Since about 1980, most of his work has been scoring films such as Toy Story, A Bugs Life, Meet the Parents, The Natural, and Monsters, Inc., for which he won an Academy Award after having been nominated fifteen times before. Here he is, with that distinctive voice, performing his 1974 song Louisiana 1927, based on the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. The song saw a surge in popularity in 2005 after it was sung by Aaron Neville for a fund raising concert in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. -Chris
