Its a beautiful sentiment, and its true how the very small things we can do for others can actually be very big things in their hearts and eyes. I would qualify this by saying that we should always be at least as good to ourselves as we are to others, and in fact, I would say that there is no one in our lives thatwe should be better to than our own selves. This is not selfish and self-serving. This is self-respecting, self-honoring and self-loving. I would also advise you and caution you to be discriminating about who you give your best and your most to, because the truth is that not everyone you can do good things for will deserve it or appreciate it. You dont have to knock yourself out doing good things for others in order to prove that youre a good person. When youre a good person, you really are not required to prove it to anyone.
