Its a classic game just starting out this early autumn evening - archrivals LA Dodgers vs. SF Giants, a divisional championship on the line...game being called by Vin Scully, closing his 65th year with the Dodgers as one of the greatest (if not the single greatest) announcers in broadcast sports history. Pitching for the Dodgers is Clayton Kershaw. I have been wracking my brains across 55+ years of baseball fandom to assess whether any pitcher in my lifetime has ever had a season like this of Kershaws. Whitey Ford, Sandy Koufax, Jim Palmer, Nolan Ryan, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Orel Hersheiser....and I keep coming up empty. This year prior to tonight, Kershaw has won 20 games and lost three - a virtually impossible record for those of you who arent baseball fans - with an ERA of 1.8, 41 straight scoreless innings (putting Hersheisers 59 scoreless innings into sharp relief), and a no-hitter in which he struck out 15 and walked none. Regardless of the outcome tonight or even in the pst-season - Kershaw has had a season for the ages in a sport which keeps ALL of its records going back to its inception as a professional endeavor to 1870. And I am saying this as a kid from Chicago whose primary team is still the White Sox.
