Ninewells staff scale new heights to raise money for charity Twelve staff from Ward 27 at Ninewells Hospital joined a fundraising team to raise more than £5,000 for charity by climbing Ben Nevis. Staff nurse Lorraine Campbell, whose five-year-old son Bradley has a very mild form of the neurological condition hemiplegia, organised the Ben Nevis challenge to raise awareness and show support for charity HemiHelp. The staff from the plastic surgery and burns ward joined Lorraine’s family and friends in the ambitious charity climb to raise money for HemiHelp, which provides support for children and young people living with hemiplegia and their families. Hemiplegia, which affects one in 1000 children, is a neurological condition that affects children in a similar way to a stroke. It is caused by damage to the brain (before or around the time of birth) and results in varying degrees of weakness and lack of control in one side of the body. Lorraine said, “Everyone has been so supportive and I am overwhelmed with the support and generosity everyone has shown. “When I thought of the idea to try and raise some money for HemiHelp I expected around six volunteers, so I was really chuffed to have 36 people joining me in the climb and all of us actually made it to the top! “I admit it was more challenging that I expected but it was an amazing experience. “I want to please say a big well done and thank you to all my family, friends and colleagues from Ward 27 for taking on this challenge with me and also thank you to everyone who made a donation.” The team donated a total of £5,121.61 to the charity. HemiHelp Chief Executive Officer Amy Couture said “This is an incredible achievement by Lorraine and her colleagues. “Thanks to their efforts we can continue to provide much-needed support and information to families affected by hemiplegia across the UK.” For further information on the condition and the charity please visit hemihelp.org.uk Photograph one: The team before they climbed Ben Nevis Photograph two: Lorraine Campbell training with her son Bradley before the climb.
