Its a deeply-held belief of Generation Zero - and all other groups involved in the Climate Voter initiative - that climate change is an issue for everyone regardless of political persuasion. The Electoral Commission recently gave its opinion that Climate Voter may be in breach of the Electoral Act. If that’s left unchallenged, Climate Voter and the six groups backing it could be subject to a range of legal requirements and restrictions that would make it difficult for us to continue. We strongly believe that the Electoral Act was not intended to capture non-partisan issues-based activities like Climate Voter. This is bigger than just Climate Voter, its about democracy and freedom of speech on any issue facing New Zealand. Thats why the Climate Voter groups have collectively decided to go to the High Court seeking an urgent decision to clarify this currently untested piece of electoral law.
