Its about time! For Immediate Release: April 16, 2014 Legislature Unanimously Passes Bill Boosting Big Game Hunting Senate Bill 190 allows paid compensation for packing of meat, hides, gear and creates apprenticeship opportunities JUNEAU-Today, the Alaska State Legislature passed Senate Bill 190, sponsored by Senator Charlie Huggins (R-Wasilla), which allows registered guide-outfitters to hire and pay certain unlicensed workers to pack meat, hides and other gear from the field as well perform other basic camp chores. Under current state law it is illegal for a registered guide-outfitter to pay unlicensed workers to perform these tasks. “As you can imagine, it is difficult to find people who will work for free,” said Senator Huggins. “This law allows registered and master guides to have the opportunity to hire all the help required to put on a professionally based hunt for their clients while properly compensating their staff.” Senate Bill 190 also creates an apprentice structure to allow unlicensed personnel to be prepared for and qualify for the “assistant guide” level in the industry. “Guiding is hard, sometimes dangerous, work that requires ‘on the job training’,” said Senator Huggins. “Packers loyally follow their competent guides learning to size and identify trophy animals as well as skinning, field dressing, and salvaging meat and hides. This experience is valuable and necessary for preparing perspective guides for a future in the industry. I am happy this bill will also enable them to be properly compensated for their services.” Senate Bill 190 now heads to Governor Parnell for his signature.
