Its almost here! Merv Shiner – Homecoming Concert – The Journey Continues Back in October of 1984, Bethlehem native, Merv Shiner did a “Homecoming” concert at Stabler Arena for about 2500-3000 folks. His back-up band for that concert was the Drifting Cowboys. The Drifting Cowboys were the back-up group for American music legend Hank Williams, Sr. Merv Shiner is coming to Wesley Church on Center St. in Bethlehem on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:00 PM for a “Homecoming Concert Part II – The Journey Continues”; almost 30 years since his original “Homecoming” concert at Stabler. This is a free concert, although a free-will offering will be taken to support the Lehigh Valley Outreach Depot and the 2015 We Got Your Back backpack program: two important ministries of Wesley United Methodist Church. Merv will be playing a Martin guitar on loan from the Martin Guitar Factory/Museum in Nazareth. Merv got his first Martin guitar at the original Martin Factory in 1937 and has been playing Martin guitars ever since. Merv will not be accompanied by the Drifting Cowboys this time, but rather by Dick Boak, Director of Artist Relations at Martin Guitar. Through song and narrative, Merv will recount his journey from that a 15 year old boy singing in his church, Calvary Reformed Church at the corner of Wood and Frankford streets in Bethlehem, in 1935 with his mother, Jennie Shiner, to being introduced on the Grand Ole Opry by Hank Williams Sr. and Minnie Pearl in 1951, through a career in the music and entertainment industry that has spanned 7 plus decades. If you are in need of some music for your soul this summer, come hear Merv, 93 years young, tell and sing his story, primarily through folk and gospel music. Want a sneak preview?
