Its been 7 years since I started reading Chetan Bhagat,and 10 years since he started writing.As I finish reading Half Girlfriend,I feel nothing has changed. Chetan has and uses the same formula.Middle class,insecure guy meeting high class sophisticated girl.College love,Lust,Friends,Filmy coincidences,Unimaginable twists,Happy ending. Despite all this,Chetan still remains as Indias most loved writer,most of the shops saying we are running out of the stock.The guardian calls him Indias paper back king.Its true either.I dont remember finishing a book during a 5 hour train journey,standing,sitting,leaning,eating and drinking. Chetan makes me read the next page,until I reach the last. Naysayers throw a million stones at him,but his billions books are sold.No matter what kind of English you use,if you have an entire generation waiting for your book to release,then you are a real writer. Chetans books are so simple and cute that you dont have to stress your mind and brain to have a pleasant reading. The boy who used to stay next to my apartment in Thrissur had never been heard of Gabriel Gracia Marquez or Paulo Coelho,but at the age of 14 he had read all Chetan Bhagats books. This dude took an entire technology addicted generation to book stores,He made them forget their laptops and facebook for at least half an hour a day. You be a starter or a seasoned reader,go read Half Girlfriend,at least you can smile,I bet,each page will either make you smile or ponder.
