Its been decades since I read a novel by John Grisham, so disappointed I was by The Client with its utterly implausible theme. Ive always admired Grishams narrative skill, but from the get-go I knew the plot hung on a false premise, that the little boy who saw what the gangsters did was afraid theyd kill him if he told anybody what he saw. We all know from the movie cliche uttered by the killer to the character whos seen too much but still hasnt figured it all out--Have you told anyone else about this? heh heh--that when the fool says Oh, no--he or she is about to become a dead duck. Anyway, while unpacking books after my move to an apartment last month, I found a paperback by Grisham I must have bought while temporarily insane or wavering illogically toward a change of heart. Maybe it was the promotional blurb, which indicated the plot and characters might be my cup of tea. They were. I kept having to check the cover, however, to make sure it wasnt one of Con Chapmans novels. The Litigators reminded me of Cons A View of the Charles, which was reissued last year as Making Partner. I finished The Litigators this morning. Grisham made me laugh continually at the hijinks and lawyer caricatures as I turned the pages following the unfolding (highly credible, funny and suspenseful) story, that I think Ill poke thru that box of books and see if I can find another Grisham winner. tinyurl/mjmqw54
