Its curious how so many people seem to be averse to critical questioning, or expressing skepticism about popular but shaky claims. A familiar refrain seems to be, Questioning everything may be the Wests way of doing things, where they hold nothing sacred, but thats not how we do things. I beg to differ. The Indian Subcontinent has a formidable history of pluralistic debate and inquiry. We codified the rules for engaging in formal debate well over two thousand years ago. Our part of the world bears the legacy of Ashokas pluralistic magnanimity and Akbars ethos of religious tolerance (at a time when Europe was still grappling with the Dark Ages and the inquisitions were in full swing). I have no wish to paint a rosy picture of the Subcontinents history. We had our share of troubles. But questioning just about everything under the sun (and beyond it) is an indelible part of our identity. Lets not sell ourselves short so willingly. The Argumentative Indian by Amartya Sen is recommended.
