Its disappointing to see Hewlett Packard lumped in with all these cowboy outfits. I spent a very happy ten years working for HP, starting at a time when Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard were still around - they were retired but still had offices at HP and would pop in a couple of days a week just to keep an eye on things. The HP that Bill and Dave built was an absolutely fantastic company - ethical, people-focused, customer-oriented, self-financing and great to work for. Bill and Dave are sadly no longer with us, so over the past few years, absent their guiding hand and wisdom, their company has gone on a barmy acquisition spree bringing in ill-fitting businesses like Digital, Compaq, EDS and, with each acquisition and influx of new management, standards of business conduct have slipped. Very sad for those of us who were lucky and privileged enough to have witnessed at first hand how a major multinational Corporation CAN be run on a human scale.
