Its getting cold outside! As the fall weather sets in and colder weather approaches, homeowners be warned that you might begin to notice more pests like spiders, rodents and even snakes in and around your home as the cooler weather rolls in. Much like humans, these pests seek shelter from cooler weather in warm environments. Unfortunately, our homes provide the perfect harborage site for these annoying pests to ride out the colder months, which can lead to a larger infestation. Spiders prefer to spin their webs in dark, undisturbed areas around the house, so homeowners should pay special attention to basements, garages and attics. We recommend keeping these areas particularly clean and clutter-free. As the months ahead approach, be sure to heed these warnings: - Fix any cracks in siding and walls, especially where pipes or wires enter the home, this is a clean route for rodents to enter the house. - Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house, snakes love seeking refuge in these areas. - Inspect items such as boxes of decorations before bringing them indoors as rodents and other insects especially roaches tend to live and feed off the glue. Store clothing inside plastic containers to help ensure rodents do not nest. -Check shoes before putting them on, as spiders often hide in these items. Hence, where the brown recluse spider got its name, nesting in reclusive areas.
