Its hard to believe I dont care for Tahiti now that I look at the photos! It clearly has natural beauty but without a doubt, its the least attractive of the FP islands we have been to. It doesnt enjoy the crystal clear aqua blue waters and beautiful white sand beaches that surround Moorea, Bora Bora and others. Its home to about 2/3 of the countrys population. Papeete, the capital city, is crowded, a bit dirty, run down and not impressive as cities go. The outskirts of Papeete are also run down. It is clear that the county has felt the effects of the 2008-2009 worldwide economic crisis. They currently have 30%+ unemployment rate. Very sad! Nevertheless, its a friendly place that has clearly blessed with breathtaking natural beauty. They have plans to revitalize Papeete by building up the beachfront (new hotels, extend beaches, etc) in hopes of making it a destination rather than just the gateway into French Polynesia as few people spend any length of time here. Hope for their sake theyre able to achieve the goal. - Hotel is the Intercontinental Resort Tahiti - Island in background is Moorea - Statue is at the site of an ancient Polynesian temple called Marae Arahurahu - Cave is called Grotte de Maraa - the site of an ancient temple that was built in front of a body of fresh water fed by an underwater spring. Local people still go there to swim and cool off from the heat and humidity. It was amazingly cool!
