Its hard to keep alert about your satiety when youre eating a million miles per minute. SLOW DOWN! I know youre trying to splurge on pleasure but more often than not youre sickeningly stuffed long before youre present minded enough to think about the amount of pleasure youre deriving. Youd actually derive more satisfaction from your meal if you simply chewed slowly, put your utensil down between bites, and considered the tastiness of the food youre enjoying. And to give this level of consideration to your eating and hunger cues... that means you have to ditch the distractions. Put the phone away. Turn the television off. Shut the magazine. Be there. In the now. You, your thoughts and physical sensations, and food. The slower pace will also give your brain some time to catch up and regulate your total consumption better. Rather than consciously waking up after a belt-busting meal... you might actually stay mindful enough to stop when satisfied. Satisfied =/= Full Its not solely about WHAT you eat... its also about HOW you eat! And if you find yourself wanting to stuff food down your gullet as quickly as possible... once you finally realize it of course... spend some time digging into the cause. Are you feeding some emotional struggle? Are you bored? Normal physical hunger should come on gradually. It doesnt carry that woof-it-down, need-it-now impulse that emotional hunger brings on. And in order to combat emotional hunger, youve gotta increase your awareness. Only then can you dig into your thought and feeling patterns and challenge them.
