Its hard to understand how patients can be discharged into the kind of facilities available. The staff cant follow instructions; for instance, the first thing they did was try to give my mother-in-law water with a straw, despite her care instructions specifically saying NO STRAW. They cant figure out her medications, and it will be 72 hours before the facility doctor examines her to approve her Xanax. So now you have an injured patient with dementia on withdrawal from pain meds and psych meds, who tries to get out of bed (against instructions) despite severe lack of balance, but there are no restraints and no one even checked on her all night long! This is the best American health can provide? This is someone with good health insurance through her pension! My wife is now having to stay with her around the clock, because otherwise there would be no care at all.
