Its heartbreaking but true. I recently had a conversation with some Brethren about a particular self-indulgence. One that people often spend quite a bit of money on that is by far...not even remotely a necessity. I appealed to the fact that this represented a waste of money that was best spent on the poor. I even appealed to both the teachings of the Savior and our Brother Paul. For this, I was chastised with personal opinion and accusations that I was a legalist. Apparently, legalism is now defined by opinion and not Sola Scriptura. Multiple times, I asked them to appeal to Scripture as justification for their opinion and multiple times the responses were laced with condemnation, opinion and sarcasm. This is ironic because they behaved in the same exact manner as those who theologically disagree with them on various issues. The irony was ironic. Sadly, what was really attacked was what the Savior taught. The responses I received were merely deflections. Sadly, their responses also stood at odds with the teachings of the Church and their theological predecessors. Unfortunately, their desire for self-indulgence stood at odds with them as well. At one point, those who upheld their position of faith throughout history represented the best theology had to offer. Now, the only thing that appears to separate them from the world...is what they read.
