Its late Saturday night and I may not get much of a response to this but I do need to apologize to a friend who posted his distaste about a particular multi-platinum musical act that is fairly well known around the globe and played all over Top 40 radio (or what the radio industry refers to as CHR - Contemporary Hit Radio). He just simply stated that he didnt get it and thought that the music was terrible. We all dislike stuff and theres no way that we could appreciate everything out there in the world of art with deep love and understanding. Were only human. I ended up posting probably just a sweeping blanket question, Could we read about a band you do get? Facebook gets really depressing reading about musical acts people dont like. Why is this the norm for social media is the bigger question? I guess it really is the bigger question that I wonder about, than really about upsetting my friend over something so trivial (even more trivial is the musical group in question had another name before and he liked that batch of music). I only ask this because I know that a few friends of mine in the Power Pop circle have tended to sway away from Facebook and have shut down their profiles because sometimes it can get overwhelming negative when it comes to music. I never considered my statement back in the late 90s to be negative that most Alternative Rock acts seemed to be really Power Pop in disguise and that most of their three minute radio hits werent really too far from Rick Springfield songs. I thought of it more as a compliment but all of my hard core Alternative fans were upset by such a blasphemous statement. Again...its all trivial in the scheme of things but this is the daily routine of someone immersed in music every single day every day of his life. Sometimes Facebook music exchanges remind me of my record store days of long ago being behind the counter. Id hear conversations that seemed more heated than anything remotely political about America and its foreign policies. It doesnt matter if youre a Country fan, Rock fan, Classical music fan or Hip-Hop fan, you like what you like and I get that. I really do. I guess it all boils down to being on Facebook for nearly eight years and MySpace prior to that, that even when I do my best to ignore some posts, I still end up putting my foot into mouth. Of course, Im a complex guy and Ill come off as a bit hypocritical because a friend of mine does nothing but entertain me whenever I read his negative posts about The Beatles and his dislike for Paul especially. Its such an easy target that its easy not to get riled up about it. I laughed many times over it and sometimes it borderlines on something an internet troll would do to ignite peoples anger but hes genuine in his distaste so why do I find his posts funny while others just rub me the wrong way? Is this all part of the disconnect that I often feel in this high tech world of algorithms making me see only a small percentage of what my friends are posting? So many questions that will never be truly answered in an incoherent rambling that I have posted on a Saturday night. Seriously, all I wanted to do was just apologize to a friend for posting my off the wall thoughts in his own personal thread that he had every right to post.
