Its no secret that THE reason I started playing (and fell in love with) guitar was because of Eddie Van Halen. I learned every note when I was 15. By 17 I was transcribing some Steve Vai solos. Music then touched me in a way that lead me away from this style of playing. I still do what I can to keep my minimal shred-type chops (because its fun, like hitting a 500 foot HR must be fun). However, I still (25 years later) cant do a tenth of what this guy could do at 16. I like to think that after all these years, I can at least understand how some shredding technique is done, while watching someone else do it. This guy has truly baffled me on numerous occasions. I have said, out loud to no one but the TV I dont even know how he just did that. I think Ive used this word, contemporarily, twice or so. He is a virtuoso. And he seems like SUCH a good person. A family first guy. An anomaly of the cock-rock era. A boy who bought flowers for the cleaning lady in some dump hotel he was staying in while tracking one of his records (true story). What happened to him, so young, is both tragic and inspiring. This is a must see for any guitar player, and for most music fans. Or, more simply, for just about everyone.
