Its pure bliss to be remembered for meaningful events by special friends (In my case; Saira Shah Halim). I am extremely fortunate that I could attend an evening programme; Halla Bol; to mark the 60th birth anniversary year of Late Safdar Hashmi Sahab. Safdar Sahab; A Communist playwright, actor, director, lyricist and a founding member of Jana Natya Manch (Peoples Theatre Front) was brutally murdered in Sahibabad; on the outskirts of Delhi, while performing a street play, Halla Bol. The event was an initiative undertaken by his sister; Shabnam Hashmi ji, who is an extra-ordinary social activist and works on issues related to democracy, secularism, women empowerment, livelihood, gender equality, VAW, literacy and adoption amidst others. The programme kick-started with Shabnam ji telling us about the formation of Javab; Janvadi Vichar Andolan Bharat . Her enthusiasm and passion was infectious, when she spoke about safeguarding democracy. Bengal is no more what it used to be, voices of dissent are being muffled, the land known for its tolerance, is steadily denying freedom of expression, She spoke. The event further witnessed young boys belting out songs, which were composed and sung by them! It was awesome. Extraordinary satire, expressed soulfully. We saw Wasim Kapoor ji painting and bringing the canvas alive with his magic, Saira Shah Halim reading out a nazm penned down by Late Safdar Hashmi Sahab, Gauhar Raza Sahab; husband of Shabnam ji and an acclaimed Urdu poet, reading nazams, which have been penned by him. The audience was under his spell ... what a fantabulous combination of a scientist and an acclaimed poet. Mashallah! An evening well spent; in distinguished company! I can never thank you enough for today Saira! This was indeed special. Sonu Bhatia, wish you were around for some more time! Long live Communists! Mujhe yaqeen tha, ke mazhabon se Koi bhi rishta nahin hai unka Mujhe yaqeen tha, ke unka mazhab Hai nafraton ki haddon ke andar ... ~ Gauhar Raza Sahab
