Its strange the way music speaks to people - or doesnt. This is an odd record. I always think the way it kicks off with that sort of fumbly bassline gives it a sort of punky feel - it reminds me of something you might have heard coming out of a scout hut or village hall in the late 70s - then it turns into something entirely different, but Im not really sure what that is. Its not really soul - though it did eventually find a home in Northern Soul circles. I think it was supposed to be a pop song but it seems destined to obscurity somehow. Theres something very mortal about it anyway, at least thats how its always seemed to me - inasmuch as it seems to have a lot to to say about mortality. But theres also something quite comforting about it. Its like, Im not going to lie to you - bad things are probably going to happen because people are just like that... and lifes like that... but, you know, that doesnt mean youre a bad person... or a lost cause or anything. Therell probably be times in your life when youre quite happy and things will be going along quite nicely... but unfortunately, it probably wont last... and then, you know... were all going to die one day... but, hey, its not all bad... do you want another drink?
