Its that time of year when horses pop up for sale at bargain basement prices, all over the country. If you are new to horses, here is a quick lesson. Fact: You cant buy a reining cow horse. There is no such thing. It is a reining horse, or it is a reined cow horse. Fact: A trail horse that pins her ears at cattle and tries to bite them is not a cutting horse. Fact: A horse did not used to be a hunter jumper. There is no such thing. There are hunters (the field or show vairety) and there are jumpers. A rare few horses have done both, but they are not things that work together. Your child can not take lessons for hunter jumper. No such thing. She may take lessons to learn how to jump, and she may show in the hunters, or in the jumpers. Fact: A horse that has jumped a log outside and walked through water is not a three day event horse A horse that has done a lower level horse trial is not a three day event horse Fact: No one has a gilding for sell. There is no such thing as a gilding. A castrated male horse is a gelding. And he is for SALE. Fact: No one is selling a wonderful green broke horse because they do not have time to ride her, they are selling because they have gotten in trouble with her, and they cant ride her. Fact: No one a horse that can go cutting, be a reiner, be a cow horse, rope, run barrels or just be a trail horse, and it is NOT a horse anyone one can ride. It can probably do none of the above, and that is why they are selling it. Fact: If you have to ask how much hay to feed a horse and be shown the amount, you probably should not own a horse. Fact: If you go to try a horse, and they have it saddled with some manner of western saddle when you get there, and there are no stirrup hobbles on the fenders, and you do not even know what Im talking about, get back in car. Do not pass go. Fact: There are a lot of wonderful horses out in the world for sale. If you need help finding one, get experienced help. Take lessons before you go try horses. Know who you are dealing with. There are a lot of people who are good folks, who help people sell horses, and they are upright about the horses and their training. It is your responsibility to be upright about your abilities.
