Its the biggest, its as sweet as it gets.... We want to be humble in victory but we want to enjoy it. Coach Bill McCartney on winning the biggest game of his career and without argument the biggest win in school history. ------ These were the glory days of college football folks. There were no playoffs, no BCS, no Super Alliance, no Bowl Alliance no Bowl Coalition. What we had was a proven bowl system with conference tie-ins. You would wake up on New Years Day and instead of having “a” national championship game, you had a series of games whose outcomes would play into deciding a national champion OR in some years, multiple national champions. The Cotton Bowl and the Sugar Bowl would start at noon, the Rose Bowl would kickoff around 3:00 pm and the nightcap was always the game down in Miami; the FedEx Orange Bowl. On any given New Year’s Day we might have had three or four de facto national championship games. Was it more exciting than what a four team playoff has to offer? The answer is obvious to any fan of the sport of college football who is old enough to remember the excitement the Colorado Buffalos must of felt on that crisp Saturday afternoon in early November 1989.
