Its tick season again (believe it or not). Definitely keep an eye on your dog or cat; ticks can be pulled off using a pair of tweezers or a special instrument for removal. Because ticks can be very small, we recommend using something to help kill ticks, as well; this will take care of the ones that you cant see. For cats, we generally recommend Frontline. The generic fipronil is fine. However, many cats react to ingredients in cheaper products such as Hartz. For dogs, there are many options. Oral chews are now available: Bravecto (treats for three months) and NexGard (treats for one month). There are a variety of topical products; we carry Frontline and Vectra. Vectra is the only product that repels ticks. All of the other products require a tick to bite the pet in order for the medication to work. Vectra is toxic to cats; even a small amount will cause muscle tremors. If you have additional questions about tick control, feel free to contact the clinic.
