Its time for your Saturday book rec, and this time Im recommending Without You There Is No Us. I bought this one for a friend for Christmas, and being the thrifty gal I am, I read it on the plane before giving it to her. (My friend approved, btw. She is also of the opinion that books are meant to be shared.) Suki Kim is a South Korean-born American who has always been fascinated by North Korea. She has visited several times, but its difficult to get a true sense of the place on such tightly-controlled tours. When she finally gets the opportunity to teach in North Korea, at a school run by missionaries for sons of the elite class, she jumps at the opportunity. Never mind that it is illegal to proselytize in NK, or that Suki is an atheist (which she must hide from her co-workers). This is a FASCINATING account of the worlds most insular and tightly-controlled society. I highly recommend it!
