Its true. Not all Zoos are created equal. But Im also happy to say, and perhaps some of you will be relieved to hear, that after working behind the scenes with staff at the Assiniboine Park Zoo for 5+ years, that our (Winnipegs) Zoo is top notch when it comes to the care thats provided for the in-house animals. The APZ commissary provides human standard quality food, the Veterinarians are all highly trained professionals who genuinely care for the animals (I actually saw a Dr. cry once when he had to euthanize a snake who had been battling cancer. This wasnt until after several attempts at surgeries to remove tumors), and the enclosures are all far and beyond the size, scope, and habitat content of those portrayed in this article. If youll recall, staff and management at the Assiniboine Park Zoo were open to the idea of Arturo (the distressed Polar Bear, currently housed at the Mendoza Zoo in Argentina) joining us in Winnipeg. Unfortunately, the Mendoza Zoo was not. If you truly want to make a difference for these animals, do your research. If youre traveling abroad, dont pay to swim with dolphins. Dont attend events at Sea World. Dont pay to pose or pet wild animals such as lions or tigers in Cambodia or whatever. If youre able to pet a lion or a tiger, theres a reason for that. And its NOT a good one. If youre planning on taking the pups to the Assiniboine Park Zoo, I say go for it. Its a happy place for the animals that live there. I could go on and on and give yall a million other reasons why the Assiniboine Park Zoo is solid in my books, but I think most of yall already know that Im a devout animal rights advocate and that I wouldnt co-sign the joint in the first place if I didnt think it was the goods.
