For surgical masters students, grab this opportunity! Please spread to your friends BASIC SURGICAL SCIENCES REVISION COURSE COURSE PORTFOLIO A. Course Outline a. Course Synopsis Basic Surgical Sciences Revision Course is a preparatory course for candidates sitting for Part 1 Master of Surgery, Orthopedics, ENT, MRCS and the entrance examinations. The course covers the three main basic medical sciences subjects which are assessed during the Part I examinations namely: anatomy, physiology and pathology. b. Lecturers Anatomy: Prof. Dr. Abdul Hamid Abdul Rashid, Physiology: Prof. Dr. Khatiza Haida Ali and Prof. Dr. Harbinder Jeet Singh, Pathology: Prof. Dr. Methil Kannan Kutty. c. Prerequisite Completion of undergraduate medical degree: MBBS or equivalent. d. Course Schedule It consists of 15 sessions and will be conducted every Friday from 2.30pm to 5.40pm. Two subjects will be covered in each session. The course will start from 16th of August 2013. *** e. Learning Objectives 1) To inculcate basic knowledge in anatomy, physiology and pathology to a level appropriate for postgraduates. 2) To facilitate in understanding and application of medical sciences, basic to clinical practice. f. Venue Academic building, UiTM, Sg Buloh Campus.Auditorium 2 or 3, level 1 [for lectures]. Medical Museum, Ground Floor and Anatomy hall, level 5 [for practical]. The schedule for each session is as follow: 2.30 – 3.50 pm: First period 3.50 – 4.20 pm: Tea break 4.20 – 5.40 pm: Second period [About 80 mins. for each period]. g. Course Contents Basic and Applied Anatomy: Abdominal wall and inguinal region. Stomach; small and large intestines; rectum and anal canal. Blood supply and lymphatic drainage of the GIT. Base of the skull Triangles of the neck, facial planes, thyroid and parathyroid glands. Pharyngeal arches, pouches and clefts and the derivatives. Thoracic wall and mediastinum. Bones and joints of the upper limb. Bones and joints of the lower limb. Muscle groups, nerve supply and nerve lesions of the upper limb. Muscle groups, nerve supply and nerve lesions of the lower limb. Physiology: Surgical physiology of body fluid and electrolytes. Normal acid-base balance and regulatory mechanisms. Regulatory mechanisms in acid base imbalance. Surgical aspects of cardiac muscle and cardiac cycle. Regulatory and compensatory mechanisms of blood pressure in hypovolaemia. Applied physiology of respiratory system. Applied physiology of renal system. Applied physiology of alimentary system. Electrical physiology and nervous system. Muscles and neuromuscular junctions. Surgical physiology of endocrine system. Pathology: Cellular injury and tissue response. a. Necrosis and apoptosis. b. Acute and chronic inflammation. Healing and repair; bone healing. Haemodynamics. Shock, infarction and embolism. a. Disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. b. Systemic inflammatory response Growth disturbances Neoplasm. Immunopathology. Laboratory medicine. ***[A total of 40 hours of teaching on 30 topics]. REGISTRATION AND FEE Course fee: RM500 per person per-course [light refreshment will be provided]***.
