“Know therefore today, and return (shuv) to your heart, that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is nothing else” (Deut. 4:39). The sages here say the meaning is not simply that there is no other God than the LORD, since that has already been established, but rather that there is no existence in the world apart from God, and that God alone sustains and upholds all things by the Word of his Power (Heb. 1:3). Return, then, to the truth of your heart: Mi li vashamayim? “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the rock of my heart (צוּר־לְבָבִי) and my portion forever” (Ps. 73:25-26).
