Its very rare that a sequel equals the film it expands on. Its even more rare for that sequel, when the first was so surprisingly good, to trump the first in every way. I grew up thinking the whole Planet of the Apes franchise was sloppy, overdone, hilariously awful from a visual standpoint (aside from that whole Statue of Liberty thing). James Franco, Andy Serkis, and Matt Reeves made me re-think that one with Rise of the Planet of the Apes - in a way that I figured couldnt be excelled. A fluke. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes takes that brief moment of quality Sci Fi filmmaking and kicks it into another dimension. Serkis, whose face, as always we see in digital re-rendering, is incredible. The script is spare, doesnt waste words, doesnt undercut a single emotion, lingers when necessary, moves at a blinding clip when needed, and never lets a single thing slip. The pathos is incredible, the humanity shines in all characters, and not for a second does anything feel cheap, cynical, or tinny. This is a genre film done right, and I loved every single frame of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
