Its winter, and in much of the country were spending far more time indoors than out. This can have a negative impact on people with lung issues like asthma, allergies, and COPD. Formaldehyde - a known carcinogen - lurks in household items such as stain repellent upholstery, carpet glue, particleboard, caulk, natural gas stoves, paint and more. Guidelines require low, safe levels in each item - but add them all up together, and they can have an unwanted effect. But theres something easy and inexpensive you can do about it. Certain houseplants are natural and efficient air purifiers. While some of them are unfortunately toxic to children and pets, there are two beautiful choices that can keep the air in your home clean. The first is the Boston Fern (top), which is probably the best of the two as it also removes toxins like benzene and xylene from the air and acts as a natural humidifier. It can be tricky to care for, though -- so anyone with a brown thumb might want to choose the Areca Palm (bottom) instead. Try putting one or two in your bedroom and see if you dont notice a difference. The more you have around the house, the better.
