It’s a common sight! Witnessed a quarrel, again, yesterday. - TopicsExpress

It’s a common sight! Witnessed a quarrel, again, yesterday. Two of my male colleagues had a show down. I could not gather the reason of their fight as most of the quarrel was full of MCs and BCs. It lasted for about 10 minutes. The showdown did not end up with a solution to their problem but the poor women of their families who were not even party to the fight and were not even physically present at the spot ended up getting abused. Have always wondered, when we men quarrel or fight and can’t help abusing each other, why do our abuses happen to be women centric? Why do we end up abusing women, instead? We all love and respect ladies of our respective families and when we fight, we know that abusing other’s women will hurt him more. We respect ladies of our respective families. The answer, perhaps, lies in our emphasis on ‘our respective’. Is this not the core of our thought process? When it comes to respect women, women in our society are not respected for being women, we respect them if they are ‘our’ respective women. Those women who are ‘not our’ are not meant to be respected. Is this not our general aproach? I have not been able to conclude the real reason for it. The root cause, perhaps, of our squinted approach is that we think that we own women. We treat, knowingly or unknowingly, women as objects and commodities and not like humans. We men, perhaps, think that we own women and can not take abuse hurled at objects and subjects of our ownership. If we were genuinely concerned about women and considered them as equal humans, our choicest of abuses would not be women centric. Saina Nehwal enters Australian Super Series Final!! Saina defeated World No 2 Wang Shixian of China 21-19, 16-21, 21-15 in the semi finals. Grand news! Right? All of us Indians love, admire and respect a Saina Nehwal! Don’t we? And we love, admire and respect a Mary Kom too. Our love, admiration and respect for such Indian ladies is unbound and immense, perhaps, because they are ‘our’ compatriots. Every year, and year after year girls do better than boys in board exams. Every year the headlines of all leading newspapers scream, “Girls outdo boys yet again’. I have not known a single man in my life who has not shown pride when we have shared such news. Every man I know and have known is always proud of the girls. But is the pride, respect, admiration and even love not because we think that our subjects have done well? If it is not so, then why there is continuing female feticide? Then why is the girl child still an unequal? Why do frequent rapes happen? Is the answer, that we are shamelessly double characters? Right? Is it not because we pretend to be saints when we are interacting in society and chauvinistic males when we are away from the public glare? Perhaps, the saintly part takes over cunningly when we are in a social circle but it can’t keep this way for long. The ghastly takes over as and when needed. While its true that we all love, respect and admire women of respected BUT respective families and ownership, our choicest of abuses are still targeted at women. Its abominable that when we end up abusing women who are not even party to our quarrels or fights. However, sometimes, we, men, show, miraculously, genuine respect for women also. One has frequently witnessed men willingly leaving seats for women in metros. Such gestures do confuse one! Perhaps, we are really double character! I am not able to conclude though!! Good Morning and Happy Sundaying!!
