It’s illegal to delay Oyo LG election - AP aspirant Wasiu Ibrahim Adeniyi, an engineer, is an Ibadan indigene aspiring for the South West Local Government chairman under the Accord Party. He spoke with Segun Adebayo about his chances and the current administration in the state. Excerpts: Why are you still pressing on with your ambition when there is no sign of a local government election holding in Oyo State? Actually, the interest has been there for long, but the fact remains that the APC state government is not doing the right thing. Because of Ajimobi’s delay to conduct local government election, the people have continued to clamour for it and the noise is getting louder by the day. That is how there can be peace, not only in the state, but the nation entirely because the people at the level are the ones truly close to the people, not the governors. The interim thing that APC is using to direct local affairs is illegal. It’s unconstitutional. That is the reason if you go to Osun State, they call them Executive Secretary not interim chairmen. That is what is in the constitution. To call council chairmen interim local government chairmen is unconstitutional. It’s illegal and Ajimobi, Senator Bola Tinubu, APC know this. What are you doing about the situation? The government’s argument is that there is a Court case. The past local government administration took the government to court and they claim the case is still pending. This is what they are basing their arguments on, that, as long as the case is in court, there is nothing they can do. That’s why they have continued with what we now have as interim local government chairmen, which is wrong in the face of the law. With the situation on ground, which has made practically impossible for elections to hold, why are some of you coming out to say you want to contest? Everybody knows that it is not certain there will be an election, but you can’t predict the government. They can come out tomorrow to say they are holding elections. They may want to come out when they perceive people are not ready. That’s why we are getting ready for the government anytime. How prepared are you? We are very prepared for whatever decision the government may take as regards the election anytime. We have been going from house to house, speaking with stakeholders and the people that are supposed to know about our plans. We have been telling them about our mission and how are we plan to take care of the common people. If you don’t know, the same people that stood against the last government to ensure that this current one got its mandate, will stand against the current administration and say no to their lies and deceitful governance. Why do you think the people want to do so? The people have seen the kind of government that is being run in the state currently and they are not happy. If you go to market women and sample their opinions about the current government, they will tell you they are not happy about it. But the same people have come out to say that they want the government to be re-elected in 2015. How do you explain that? The truth is that some people are benefitting from the government’s largesse. So, what do you expect to hear from them? If you look at the percentage of the people saying that, you will discover that it is very low. If you go to vast majority of the people who should be getting the dividends of democracy from the government, they are not getting anything from the government. This is sad and unacceptable. The people brought the government into power, they deserve more than what they are getting. A lot of prople still don’t believe that the Rashidi Ladoja/Adebayo Alao-Akala partnership will eventually work. Things have really changed. Our father, Senator Adewolu Ladoja, ia a man of passion and means. He was the one that gave Alao-Akala his political break when he picked him as his running mate back then. As a loving and forgiving father, he has forgiven his son. This is the biblical case of a prodigal son returning home. Alao-Akala is a friend of the house. He has perfected plans with Ladoja to oust the present government and we are all working towards that.
