It’s talk about it Tuesday and as I drink my colon cleansing liquids today I find myself once again compelled to talk about my personal colonoscopy experience. It was about this time last year when I took to the Shine for Scott posting page to talk about my nerves with my upcoming gastroenterologist visit. Very soon afterward I was dismayed to learn that even with my private insurance plan; the co-pay for the procedure was beyond what I could afford. I was part of a large group of citizens that did not make enough money to comfortably handle medical expenses but still made too much money to qualify for assistance. This highlights one of the reasons that Shine for Scott is so important. We serve to help those in the CSRA who are in a similar financial jam and could use financial assistance to pay for diagnostic procedures that save lives. This year as I prep for the exam, my load is much lighter since I am armed with affordable health care thanks to the Affordable Healthcare Act that went into effect this month, making my payment portion a fraction of what it was last year. This is not intended to be a political post to spur and ideological debate, but I did feel the need to remind everyone to consider all available options for this very important screening. With the ACA, my confidence in my financial responsibility is bolstered and my fears of the exam (somewhat) diminished. I will of course keep my thoughts positive and post my updates here!
