Ive Had Type 2; My Doc Put Me On Insulin; Do I Have Type 1 Now? #diabetes #health If youve truly had type 2 diabetes and youve been started on insulin, you do not have type 1 diabetes now. You are now officially considered to have insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes. We discussed in an earlier post that type 1 diabetes means the pancreas isnt working at all (in most people with type 1 diabetes), and people with type 2 diabetes have some simultaneous combination of both insulin resistance along with a weak/dysfunctional pancreas. Those abnormalities in the persons body/glucose system determine whether its type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The fact that one uses insulin is not the determining factor as to whether or not its type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Almost all people with type 1 need to take insulin for survival (unless theyre in some kind of honeymoon phase - more on that later). The fact that nearly all people with type 1 diabetes must be on insulin causes some of this confusion. Of course as we mentioned in earlier posts, it can be tough for the clinician to tell type 1 from type 2 diabetes. Theres also type 2 diabetes that behaves somewhat like type 1 and has severe pancreatic dysfunction (what some call type 1 1/2 or type 1.5) - see the earlier post on this. And there are other types of diabetes such as what has been called MODY, something called Flatbush Diabetes etc. It can be very confusing and takes some sorting out. Dr. Grady
