Ive always misunderstood depression, until someone I knew - TopicsExpress

Ive always misunderstood depression, until someone I knew personally went through it. Did some reading and, jokes aside, this is more or less what Ive learnt. - Being sad and being depressed are not the same thing. Thats like not being able to sleep and saying you have insomnia. No, most probably you suffer from internet. - Depression is like an illness that affects the chemistry of the brain. The same way flu is an illness that affects your lungs, nose etc. It is a mood disorder. - Suffering from depression does not mean a person is mentally weak. The same way as a person with cancer is not accused of being physically weak. - Depression is not always/necessarily triggered by traumatic situations. Your life can be perfectly normal and you can have deep depression. - You cannot motivate a person with depression to snap out of it or look at the bright side. The same way you cannot tell a person with a broken leg to snap out of it and start walking. So quit it with the picture quotes. - There a many different types of depression, all with varying degrees of severity. Some are even caused by changes in season or lack of exposure to sunlight. Yes, that is possible and its not funny. Lastly, you cannot diagnose yourself with depression. Only qualified professionals can. You may just have severe FOMO and the only cure for that is to get a life.
