Ive been active on FB for about three years. During this time, Ive engaged with literally hundreds of people all across the US, to a lesser extent across the whole world. My FB friends are overwhelmingly people I never met, and though those connections are not emotionally deep, I do believe the exchange of ideas and enthusiasms has inherent value. Moreover, its a safer exchange than an emotional one, because almost everywhere (but here) the rule, Every interaction is an interview applies. Here we dont have to disguise disappointments in ourselves if those things were never part of the conversation in the first place. If ones life plan/expectations are not effected by the exchange, theres no pressure to be dishonest. Because of this, I find solace in this place that has no location. I opened up to my wall today, this was the top notification: My 18 year old was shot and killed -- mistaken identity. This is the second time in these three years Ive been recipient of such a post from a person I engage with without truly knowing. I have no clue how to help this woman. What can I possibly say?
