Ive been asked now and again for my top five favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. So, here it goes. 5: Heart Of Ice Cant help but love this episode, not just for redefining Mr. Freeze, but because its just genuinely captivating. The late Michael Ansara really did an amazing job with the character, and the many emotional moments really do work. 4: Judgment Day I like this episode a lot for the fact that youre never quite sure who this Judge person is til the end. Malachi Throne voicing the Judge is an incredible choice, and hes fantastic, as is everyone else in the episode. As per usual. And that last scene in Arkham gives me chills every time. 3: Over The Edge I havent met one person who doesnt like this episode, its so edge-of-your-seat with what it does and goes through, and Bob Hastings as Gordon especially knocks it out of the park for me, performance-wise. A great sort of what if? episode. 2: Two-Face Part 1 & 2 A fitting spot for this two-parter. Like many of the cast is with their characters, Richard Moll as Dent/Two-Face is perfect. And this episode gives us another version of how Harvey became Two-Face, which totally works in the BTAS world. Lots of excellent moments, I especially love Bruce Waynes nightmare. 1: Read My Lips Back in the day this was my first exposure to Arnold Wesker/Scarface, and I never stopped finding him to be a compelling villain. Hes just so deeply psychotic. And this episode just has such a great old film noir feel to it, its so amazing. I adore it. As a voice actor, I absolutely love what George Dzundza did with the characters, such distinct voices and feelings to them. Brilliant. Bet youre surprised none of them are Joker episodes, eh? Well it isnt that I didnt enjoy Joker episodes, I just found that they didnt quite get to do what they wanted to with the Joker til things like Mask Of The Phantasm, Justice League or Return Of The Joker. I think they do a better job with the character in those bits. My favorite Joker episode in the shows proper run is The Man Who Killed Batman, for those wondering, despite how hilariously off-model he is in the whole episode. So yep there ya have it.
