Ive been in the Big Apple for three days now, first teaching at CraftFest, and now attending ThrillerFest. After 20 years in the thriller-writing business, I still have to pinch myself to make sure Im not dreaming as I hang out with so many of my literary heroes. Late yesterday afternoon, I met colleagues at the bar in the Algonquin Hotel for my annual nod to Dorothy Parker and her famous round table. While there, I spent a long time talking with Tom Sawyer (no, not THAT one, the real one), whose career behind the camera in Hollywood stretches back decades. He was the show runner for Murder, She Wrote, and is one of those guys whose fascinating stories I could listen to forever. After that, I attended the opening ThrillerFest reception with hundreds of friends, colleagues and acquaintances. After they kicked us out of the party, I went with Reavis Z. Wortham and his wife Shana, F. Paul Wilson, and Chris Grall and his wife over to the Campbell Apartment, up in the mezzanine above Grand Central Station for drinks and a light dinner. What a beautiful spot. And heres how I know Im getting older, and maybe little wiser: Knowing that tonight and tomorrow will both be late nights, I went to bed at 10:30. Yeah, I know thats not a very exciting end, but it made for a much better morning. Tonight, Ill be dining at Delmonicos in the Financial District with Jeffery Deaver and the Worthams. Its been a while since Ive had a 9:00 p.m. dinner reservation, but Ive got to be reasonably well-behaved because I have a panel tomorrow morning at 10:00, followed by a television interview at 11:40.
