Ive been insured with State Auto for over 22 years. Ive had a policy with them for over 16 years.I have family members back home whove been with them longer. I told them in March (update: it was the end of February, just before we hit the road west) I would be moving to California but also retaining a residency in Indiana as I continue to come back for business as well as the fact that we werent sure we were going to stay because everything happened so fast. I switched the mailing address to California during the last payment (update: made on 2014/09/19) in preparation for our officializing our move here in the next month. I didnt want Nathan in Porter - whose condo we co-owned in our last place of residency before we moved - to worry about our mail. But other paperwork had to be finished first. And I still split time between the two parts of the country. Well they called today. 2:15 voice mail. Instead of asking me what was going on with their long-time customer from a family of long-time customers, they opted instead to tell me theyre going to send me a very strongly-worded snail mail letter to my California address threatening to cancel my insurance and telling me that Im walking on thin ice because they dont cover out here and my address change says I no longer live in Indiana, implying they wont cover me if I get into an accident, and that I need to shop for insurance out here. And that, as we told you. Apparently, they forgot the stuff I told them and how the conversation ended, opting instead to go for CYA. Blowing up trust is a helluva way to end a 22-year relationship. Friends and family are going to hear about it as well. Goodbye, Stato Auto. Hello, USAA.
