Ive been kind of ignoring the bell-ringers (easy enough to do when youre broke anyway, at least till payday) until I saw this. I have to agree, based on all Ive been reading, they are probably trying harder than almost anyone else I know of to adjust their views. In the past this has really bothered me because in my extensive disaster work, the Salvation Army has been much more helpful in various ways than the Red Cross. Im not saying that the ARC is no good as they do serve a purpose and I believe that hte vast majority of volunters have hearts of gold, but they often seem to have more of a political/money/power agenda and they dont play very well with other agencies. The SA on the other hand has always been there with food and assistance in every disaster zone Ive been in except maybe downtown New Orleans...but with the flooding still going on, that was understandable.....and in return have always maintained a low profile, quietly doing their work...perhaps with a dose of Jesus thrown in, but not obnoxiously so, especially considering that they are a faith-based organization and one of the few that I have a decent opinion of. Ive wanted to support their work more, but with some of their anti-gay stances have felt morally opposed to giving without a guarantee that I wasnt supporting work that would undermine the freedoms of my gay friends...and of course, in an organization like that, any and all money eventually helps support all work. I think I know who will now be getting what help I can give without throwing myself under the bus sdgln/commentary/2013/12/23/setting-record-straight-salvation-army#sthash.vhB39iax.spXmjPkr.dpbs
