Ive been kind of irritated by the fact that Nick Cannon has such a negative view on the recent fascination with American Slavery in Hollywood. Ive even had a black person say to my face that they were tired of all the slave movies. I havent been this internally fervid about something Ive heard in the media since the verdict in the George Zimmerman case and the time Kendrick Lamar promoted not voting in the midst of the potential reelection of the first African American President of The United States of America, Barack Obama. America has a lengthy record of trying to keep the history of American slavery and segregation swept under the rug and out of the ears, eyes and mouths of the lineage descended from what may be the gravest crime against a people. The fact that some of our greatest black actors, and leaders in the African American community have gotten the freedom of artistic expression, the willingness, and historical knowledge to convey even a fraction of this time in history from the perspective of black people using a platform that reaches every race, gender, and age group over the entire world should be commended. People have fought for years to try and get some of black history that we know in the textbooks in our schools, and seeing that the high school I went to barely had any textbooks, Hollywood seems like it would be the perfect outlet to span social classes too. No black person, especially a black man in the publics eye should say anything as ignorant as Nick Cannon did. Actors and actresses such as Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor should be praised for having the bravery to take on such a responsibility of sharing a part of history and enlightening a people. I hope I get to see many more stories from my ancestors presented in such an effective and thought provoking way. Recently found out that Im like a 3rd cousin to Nick Cannon and I believe he should be searching high and low for a way to get his name in the credits of one of these monumental films instead of belittling them because now Im ashamed of being remotely related to him.
