Ive been nominated to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a couple - TopicsExpress

Ive been nominated to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge a couple of times now. However, my lack of initiative in taking the challenge is due to the fact that I dont view dumping a bucket of iced water over my head as a challenge (running into the freshwater springs in Ocala, FL on the other hand...). A real challenge, in my opinion, would be researching what ALS is, and how it affects people. Something I had done once the Ice Bucket Challenge started floating around my News Feed. What does the acronym, ALS, stand for? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease in many medical-related TV shows, such as House, M.D. ALS affects the nerve cells in both the brain and in the spinal cord. As the disease progresses in someone, their motor neurons begin to die. When these neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. This, in turn, causes the affected muscles to eventually atrophy (something anyone whos broken a limb or has gone through knee/shoulder surgery knows very well). Not only does the muscle deteriorate, but it begins to scar and harden the affected area. Please help others learn. Learning and understanding is worth much more than ice in water. Also, dont forget to donate! :P
