Ive been reading a lot of articles regarding Typhoon Haiyan, its aftermath, and the governments response to it. There are a lot of criticisms going around and some are justified. However, this article from CNN iReport really caught my attention because people have been sharing it on their Facebook wall. Please read the article. And to the author, JustBeinReal, from Hong Kong, here is my response to you: It is not fair to judge all Filipinos when you live a good distance away. Its not fair when you dont know our culture well or the real situation in the Philippines. Unless you were not given the privilege of an education, when you are living in a shack with no electricity, when you see your children hungry and the only option you see is to vote for the politician who gave you a few pesos to feed your family for a day, then maybe, you should offer a little more empathy to the people who are actually living the life I mentioned. Instead of writing what I consider as a useless, opinionated letter, you should just continue to help the typhoon victims. You have a lot of options to choose from. I am not defending our politicians. They are really lacking at times. And although it isnt against the law to brand relief goods with your name, it is obviously done in bad taste. I can even understand your frustration. However, just because a Filipino allows his children to wear or eat those politically branded goods, instead of asking his children to walk on the streets barefooted and hungry, it doesnt mean that he is turning a blind eye. For the people who are desperate, politics is the last thing on their minds. The first thing is survival. And for the Filipinos who are educated, we arent turning a blind eye too. Most educated Filipinos have been watchful. I am even in awe of the unity we have been showing lately to fight corruption and help our countrymen in need. So its really a stick on my side when this foreigner criticizes the Filipinos generally. Its ok to be watchful, but you should have tried to be more politically correct at the very least. Take note people, this author, JustBeinReal, wrote another article in CNN iReport entitled, Why We Should Not Trust the Filipinos. To which he stated: To the world, please do not let your guard down, especially when dealing with a corrupt Roman Catholic country like the Philippines. So tell me, what do his articles say about him?????
