Ive been running my facebook page > Alistair Kennedy - Visual Artist < since the summer of 2009, back then it was a bit of a novelty and I just saw it as a useful extension of my website. Over the years it has grown steadily and organically without much input. It became a place where I would happily reveal new or in-progress artworks to a friendly, engaged and supportive network. Sharing my ideas and announcing forthcoming exhibitions or successful projects. It was something to do while my paint was drying, during print runs or late night studio tea breaks. It wasnt something I wanted to spend much time on, worry about or become a part of the job. About 18 months ago though that changed, I noticed my posts where only reaching a handful of the people who follow my page, barely 20%. I was also being bombarded with messages from facebook to; pay for increased reach, Boost your post or advertise for likes. Social networks should be free and democratic. I also dont want it to become a chore getting my message across or sharing what I do. I understand the need to make profit out of what you do and the urge to monitise this platform, but landing this on its users, to me is a big mistake. Facebook will pay the price for this as people become tired of its totalitarian attitude and migrate to other platforms. This networking environment will quickly stagnate and be populated solely by large corporate brands, photos of people dinner and animated gifs of cute fluffy cats. To see what I do, when Im not doing this, feel free to pop over to my page via the tag above or using the link Ive handily posted in the comments below. :) >>
