Ive come to believe that when many Americans hear the cry, Thats unconstitutional!, they merely dismiss it as some right-wing naysayers throwing up a silly, irrelevant obstacle to progress. These many Americans dont really know what their own Constitution is, or what it means, and they dont really much care. But the truth is that we do in fact have a Constitution, and for good reason. It is through the Constitution that we created the very government many Americans hold dear and trust deeply. Article I outlines what Congress is to be, how it is to operate, what its powers are and are not, and how members are elected. Article II creates the office of the President and describes what it means to be Commander-in-Chief. Article III vests the judicial power in a Supreme Court and whatever inferior courts Congress creates. The very idea of a written constitution is rooted in the observation that government, always, is potentially dangerous, even while acknowledging the good it can do. And thus the purpose of a constitution is to channel the energy and power of a government toward its proper ends, while preventing it from doing harm or injustice, preventing it from violating the rights of some in order to benefit others. So for those who think the Constitution is just a tool of partisanship, give it a read sometime. Its short. Its pretty simple and straightforward. And its yours. You might want at least to know whats in it before you throw it away.
