Ive come to observe and notice over the years that most drum/percussion teachers or drummers/percussionists dont teach or take the motions of drumming seriously. I know many arguments and points will be made about that statement (age, experience, level of importance etc.), but to show students the motions (meaning smooth flowing movement of the fingers, wrists, and even arms) gives them an idea on how to feel better when playing, SOUND better, and prevent any type of harm to the human body. It is important for certain muscle groupings to be used depending on what it is you are trying to execute or what genre you are playing, but that doesnt mean the appearance of stiffness or feeling of stiffness or tension cant be prevented. The reason why Im posting this is because as a private drum teacher for about a year, Ive started to integrate this importance into my drum lessons to help the students not work as hard physically and to start realizing the concepts of flow, rebound, and muscle memory. Depending on the age(s) of my many students, most of them are beginning to realize and understand this outlook and how it benefits. Fellow drummers, drum teachers, and anyone else, Im interested to see and hear what you have to say, whether it is in opposition of what I stated or in support. Let the conversation commence :)
