Ive got my issues with a lot of stuff Actors Equity Association has done in the past decade or so, but I could not be more on board with this. Dont bill your show as a Broadway tour and charge people exorbitant prices for tickets when all that extra money is going straight into the producers pockets instead of to paying the performers what they deserve. Non-Equity tours are fine and dandy and often full of incredibly talented people, but audiences deserve to know the difference and expect ticket prices to vary accordingly. The more often producers can get away with charging theatergoers a fortune while paying the talent only the barest minimum, the fewer well-paying, union-protected jobs there will continue to be, and both audiences and performers will feel the effects. This isnt about looking down on or insulting Non-Equity performers; this is about trying to enact change by educating the theatergoing public about a side of the business of which they may not currently be aware. #AskIfItsEquity isitequity.org
