Ive got real mixed feelings about this. I mean, everyone knows the deal with internships - not just at Marvel, but everywhere. You work your balls off, you do all the stuff real employees dont want to do, and if youre good enough, people like you, and the timing works out, you get a job out of it. Its how it happened for me at Marvel. But, that being said, the internship culture in this country is profoundly broken, and according to a lot of judges and legal experts, illegal. Even if youre getting college credit, most unpaid internships out there are in violation of the law, in that the work being done by interns would normally be done by paid employees, and that the companies are getting direct benefit out of the intern being there while not providing any kind of real formal training or educational benefits. Additionally, while it wasnt my experience, and I dont think its the case at Marvel, there are plenty of places out there who use unpaid internships as a way to get free labor from people they have no intention of hiring, navigating around not only wages, but also taxes and legal protections put into place for workers. America has a strong culture of Work hard! Itll solve everything! that makes it hard to stand up in support of people like this, especially if you have memories of keeping your head down and busting your ass yourself, but in a lot of ways, internships are broken, exploitive systems that contribute to the countrys unemployment woes. thewrap/marvel-entertainment-sued-by-unpaid-intern-in-class-action-wage-lawsuit/
