Ive had a great week and felt compelled to share a story with you.Its a Love story about a man and a student/athlete. Not what your thinking! Rather a story of triumph, will power, belief and faith. The only credit I can take from this story is I hired the coach and I bared witness to the accomplishment. It starts with a young man named Robbie who when we arrived a Piper was a 1.6 gpa student and ineligible to compete in varsity football. Robbie is a Haitian American who dreams of being the first in his family to go to college an obtain a degree. The coach Chris Baldwin (my DC) a stogy old school Irishman. Chris handles my academic study hall and tracks the grades for my Varsity and JV program. Chris and his wife Susan are known throughout North Broward to open their home to kids in need, feeding, clothing and sometimes housing kids in distress. As the story goes through many tears Robbie shared his dreams of playing high school football and going to college with Coach Baldwin. Once again coach Chris stepped up his game. Every directive that the coach gave Robbie he followed through on; tutoring, online recovery, night classes, after school labs. Whatever it took. Robbie is a Bear of a young man, strong and quick. He is unselfish and through our tumultuous season played both on Offense and Defense. He was recognized by the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel as an all county honorable mention DL for Piper and a BCAA North squad All Star. As graduation approaches this coming June 5th Robbie Dieujuste will receive his diploma, and head to the great white north of Michigan and attend a small liberal arts college named Adrian College a Division III powerhouse program. Robbies final gpa will stand at 2.4 and for those in the school system will understand how difficult it is, while a .8 % increased sounds small, its enormous to accomplish in just one year. Thank you to the Admissions folks at Adrian, and to their coaching staff for staying with Robbie since the small college fair in March. Often times assistant coaches dont get recognized, but to the folks that read this story I appreciate every little thing my staff members do. We are many times as coaches judged by wins, losses and titles won. It comes with the job. But these are the victories we strive for on my staff at Piper HS in Sunrise. When you do things the right way I believe you will be rewarded. So to Chris Baldwin I say Thank You for your love and dedication to our kids. Also my other staff members; Monte Dilworth, Terry Harden, Tony Johns, Coach K. Lewis (sorry dont know the correct spelling of coaches first name, oops) Courtney Cullin, Jerry Jones and Kevin Bethel.I have no doubt Robbie will graduate from college and if ever his resume should cross your desk,I can assure you he will not let you down. The first of his family. AWESOME. Bengal Nation is rolling in the right direction, dont be shy get on board!!! thanks, Coach Mitchell
