Ive heard lot of people say they couldnt wait to leave behind the place where they were born, and Ive heard this most often from people born in Ohio, particularly Akron and Cleveland. Im reading a great book--my literary recommendation for April--about a man who chooses to stay in a place people cant wait to leave: the Rust Belt. Its called The Hard Way On Purpose, by David Giffels, beautiful in its loathing of these two cities which struggle for real identities they can finally be proud of in America. There was never any color in the 30 miles between Akron and Cleveland. It was a masterpiece of monochrome until you hit the city limits. There, the celestial flatness was spiked by a huge steel factory smokestack with giant, fantastical flames roaring out its top. It looked exactly like hell and smelled worse. Thats how we knew we were in Cleveland. Kind of makes me want to visit my Akron, Ohio family again.
